Lack of support

It was hard for me to find the emotional and personal support that I needed to get out of the abuse. I had to do a lot of the work myself, in learning about the very few resources available to us. My family did not understand what abuse was, so they were not the best fit for that job. I didn't even understand what it was when it was happening because I was so young, in the relationship. I had to grow up fast, in order to wake up to the reality that he really didn't care.
